If You Don’t Have Self Control Others Will Control You
The Rationalist Society of Problem Solvers - Recommended Learning of The Week - Podcast "a16z with Balaji Srinivasan / Steph Smith"
Self control seems to be one of the most underrated practices in life. So many truly amazing people attribute much of their success to their ability to impose self discipline. How much of the opposite do you think is also true - where the lack of self discipline is the source of suffering?
“The greatest form of self-love is self discipline.”
Can you guess who said that? We first heard it from the actor Will Smith who used to give some pretty introspective speeches on Youtube before his recent fall from grace.
As Balaji explains, all of the seven deadly sins arise from a lack of self control. The seven virtues, the opposite. But most fascinating to us is Balaji’s idea for highly aligned people to create a Network State. His vision for the world is as profound to us as America probably was when it was founded.
Instead of wasting three hours scrolling for dopamine hits on social media today, why don’t we give a few hours of our time consuming something that can spawn betterment all around us?
Steph Smith does an amazingly astute job of helping Balaji break down some of his mind shattering ideas for what he believes can be the best world possible. Spoiler alert: it starts with making better systems - new ones that make the old ones obsolete.

As always the entire purpose of The Rationalist is to connect with other solutions-minded people like yourself! We strive to be a Society of Problem Solvers, and if you align with that we are happy that you are here. For 4 billion years on this planet there were only single-celled organisms. Then one day they somehow learned to work together and make complex multi-celled creatures like you and me. Right now we are like those single-celled organisms. Our next evolution is finding how to work together, better.

So true! And people also are paying waaaaaaay to much attention to their "feelings" and use their feelings to justify a loss of self control. People should be focusing on what their intellect says, rather than what their feelings say. To be deep in your feelings is to not be in good control. Think!!
