Solving for Disease X
Using decentralized science and human swarm intelligence technology to combat any pandemic.
At the Society of Problem Solvers we try to avoid doom-and-gloom style writing, but at the same time if there is a problem we want to address it. So, with the recent uptick in discussions at the WEF (World Economic Forum) about “Disease X” — a mysterious hypothetical disease that the centralized powers are planning for that could be “twenty times as deadly as Covid” — we felt this could be an opportunity to show how Human Swarm Intelligence Systems could be used to combat an outbreak or new pandemic. Or, if you prefer to use your imagination for better things, then at the very least how we could have handled Covid much better if we solved from the bottom up, in decentralized and highly-aligned groups using high-trust systems, instead of from the top-down corrupted systems that were tasked with handling it.
If you are brand new to the idea of Collective Intelligence and Swarm Intelligence, it is a deep rabbit hole that we have covered now in many articles, and if you are just discovering it we suggest to start HERE , then HERE and HERE. When it comes to sharing the ideas of collective intelligence, we don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. The potential for humanity is just too high, and the evidence keeps piling up that this is a good way for humanity to go if we want to solve our problems better together, and create new knowledge together.
Swarm intelligence is group problem solving. Imagine 100 people trying to solve the same thing. Individually, let’s say that each brain weighs one pound, so 100 brains would be 100 pounds. Together — solving the problem as a decentralized swarm — one hundred brains combine to form a new brain that is much bigger than the original 100 pounds. The new brain is more like 200lbs, or even 500 lbs. That’s the general idea behind a swarm. You create a new problem solving entity.
We are not going to debate today if collective intelligence really works, or if there is wisdom in crowds, since we have already defended those positions in many other articles. Today we are just going to assume you understand how swarming works and are just going to show you how we could use it to optimize a fight against any pandemic.
A brain of brains, or as described by Tim Urban in his book “What’s Our Problem?” a “Genie.”
For this exercise, let’s assume that a high-trust human swarming system such as THIS is already built.
Instead of solutions coming from top-down centralized corporations and governments like they it did during Covid, the solutions in our new system would percolate from the bottom up.
The following would be our steps to solve for disease X:
Break up medical staff all over the world into human swarms on our high-trust system. Each hospital, city, town, state, and country could have their own swarm. Here people would monitor the disease, share experiences with it, run open think tanks and idea labs, share conjectures on how to beat the disease, and problem solve together on 100% transparent systems where everyone could compare notes and evidence to see what is and what isn’t working. In other words, all participants would be on a quest together to see if we could find explanatory knowledge to help us solve the problem at hand from the bottom up, as both a global decentralized swarm, and as many smaller individual swarms.
Divide populations into into a three groups. 1) The most vulnerable 2) The average person 3) Those who already beat the disease and had immunity. People in category number one should be offered (on their own free will) extra protection. People in category number 3 should put themselves in higher risk places in society that need the most help, since they are the least vulnerable. Again, all volunteer-based on their own free will, but encouraged and highly praised and honored for those that did so.
Early treatment. Once we established a few good conjectures on how to treat disease X, we would use metrics and outcomes to guide us. Since this disease is 20x more deadly than COVID-19, we would see with much more certainty and clarity if therapeutics, nutrition, vitamins, and treatments were working well. It would be hard for corrupt centralized entities to skew data here to the point of hiding successes, or corrupting medical studies (like what happened with hydroxychloroquine at the Lancet, or what happened with Ivermectin during Covid). Some of the therapeutics that worked for Covid might be a great place to start since in vitro — and now with many more studies out — we can see that single-strand RNA viruses are indeed slowed in replication using the right treatments. The goal here of course being to prevent severe illness and hospitalizations.
We would run daily and weekly swarming sessions to make worldwide conjectures on what new treatments and solutions to try. We would offer our solutions up to criticism, and we would do our best to constantly improve all metrics and outcomes. By using a Human Swarm Intelligence system, we would have the ability to ask the entire medical community a question and get one creative and interesting answer (or several, ranked) from the entire world in a matter of minutes, like THIS.
The use of multiple modalities: A multi-faceted approach to treatments, including the use of medications, supplements, lifestyle interventions, and supportive care to address the various aspects of the disease and support overall health as new knowledge was created by the swarms, and tested.
Public health measures: We would use information from the decentralized swarms to make recommendations to society on how to mitigate. All public health would be recommendations, and there would be no mandates. If you trust an entity, then follow its recommendation, including the swarm’s.
Decentralized data collection on the disease that does not pass through the hands of gatekeepers, or other centralized and corrupted entities such as big government or big businesses.
This last one might be just theoretical at the moment, but instead of gain-of-function, we use genetics to create “reduction-of-function,” with the goal to make the pathogen less deadly but still be able immunize you against the original strain. Then people can have the option of purposely infecting themselves with much safer strains. We wrote about something similar HERE.
And that’s it.
There is absolutely no reason for society to allow centralized gate-keeper control over medicine, pandemics, or science ever again. All centralized power is corruptible, and therefore should be replaced with decentralized and transparent problem solving systems.
It just so happens that a Human Swarm Intelligence Systems can create a super powerful entity that we could all use to help us solve for disease X better. So why don’t we build one?

For over 3 billion years on this planet there were only single-celled organisms. Then one day they somehow learned to work together and make complex multi-celled creatures . Right now we are like those single-celled organisms. Our next evolution is finding how to work together, better…
Solving problems is happiness.

Doctors did this during Covid sort of: found solutions, shared them, saved lives, and were punished. We aren’t allowed to think, do our own research, or share knowledge. I hope the thing you are building is untouchable like Bitcoin. If you can do that, and attract more and more people, eventually the people can win.
I love the Reduction-of-Function theory! If it is possible to do GOF, why not ROF? New to this SPS concept - seems as though the outlier docs and scientists were using the swarm theory but got squashed by the swarm of centralized planners.
