We Must Reject "Power Over" Systems for "Power With" Systems
Our current systems are “power over” the people. The fix we must strive for is “power with” the people. So, we must build systems that nurture that.
(NOTE: many of the ideas in this article came from substack writer Anarcasper’s enlightening insights).
For most of human history, our systems have been built on a simple premise: a small group holds power over everyone else. Governments, corporations, media, education, and even our social platforms operate with a top-down architecture. A few decide, many obey. A few profit, many comply. A few speak, many listen.
This model is outdated, easy to corrupt, and full of abuse. The world is too interconnected, information too abundant, and human potential too widespread for power to stay concentrated at the top any more.
We are entering a moment that calls for a fundamental shift in how society organizes itself. We must move from power-over systems to power-with systems.
This is not just a political shift. It is a shift in human operating systems (like we wrote about HERE).
At the core, this must be a shift in culture, and what systems we demand be the foundation of our culture.
What is a “Power Over” System?
A power over system is built on control and hierarchy. It is designed so that a small group holds authority, information, and influence over a larger group. These systems share recognizable traits:
Top-down centralized systems, aka “spider” systems
Decisions made behind closed doors
Information controlled and filtered
Reward structures that benefit insiders
Accountability designed to protect the powerful, not the people
Citizens treated as spectators, not participants
Power over systems are fragile. They require force, secrecy, or manufactured consent to maintain control. They breed distrust, division, and disengagement.
When people sense that power is used on them, rather than with them, trust collapses. We feel used, not represented.
The Alternative: “Power With” Systems
A power with system distributes agency. It invites participation, transparency, and shared responsibility. It acknowledges that on average collective intelligence outperforms centralized intelligence, and that the wisdom of a group, when structured well, surpasses the decisions of an elite few.
Power with systems:
Treat citizens as contributors, not subjects
Use transparent processes that anyone can observe and verify
Share data openly so truth is not controlled by gatekeepers
Give people tools to solve problems together
Reward contribution, collaboration, and outcomes
These systems are not “no power” systems. They are shared power systems. Power is not eliminated. It is multiplied.
Why Collective Swarm Intelligence Matters Now
Nature has already perfected power-with systems.
Bees, ants, flocks of birds, and schools of fish operate through swarm intelligence. There is no dictator bee. No top-down command center. Instead, information flows freely, signals are transparent, and decision making emerges from the group in real time.
This model is:
Faster
More adaptive
More resilient to corruption or failure
When a hive decides on a new nest site, it is not by coercion. It is through testing, signaling, iterating, and converging on truth together.
Human systems should work the same way.
Technology now gives us the tools to coordinate like a hive, flock, or swarm. We can build systems (like we wrote about HERE, HERE, and HERE) where millions of people share information, evaluate evidence, test solutions, and converge on decisions more accurately than any single leader or institution.
But this only works if we reject secrecy, concentrated power, and manipulation. Swarm intelligence collapses when signals are distorted or controlled.
Why Transparency and Decentralization Are the Key Ingredients
Power-with systems are not possible without radical transparency and decentralized structure.
Transparency ensures that no one can hijack information. Decentralization ensures that no one can hijack control.
Together they create a self-correcting ecosystem that is:
Hard to corrupt
Hard to capture
Hard to manipulate
Easy to trust
Imagine systems where data, evidence, and decision making happen in the open. Where claims are verified by many, not rubber stamped by a few. Where citizens can see how conclusions were reached, challenge assumptions, and contribute knowledge.
This is how we restore trust.
Not through better leaders.
Through better systems.
The Society of Problem Solvers Vision
If we want a world that works for everyone, we must build platforms where the public participates in truth finding, not just consumes it. Where solutions emerge from the crowd, not the crown.
Our aim is to design systems where:
Evidence is presented openly
Anyone can scrutinize or contribute
Bad information is challenged by many in real time
The best ideas rise because they work (results-based), not because they are funded
This is not idealistic. It is practical. It is how open-source software powers the internet. It is how Wikipedia (before it was captured) outperforms encyclopedias. It is how markets outperform central planners. It is how nature has coordinated billions of organisms for millions of years.
Humanity has the technology to build power-with systems. What we lack is the cultural commitment to step away from power-over thinking.
The Choice Before Us
We are living through the collapse of trust in institutions. This is not a failure of people. It is a failure of structure.
We cannot fix power-over systems by tweaking them. We must replace them with power-with systems designed for transparency, participation, collective intelligence, and collective imagination.
The future belongs to whichever model we choose next.
Power-over will lead to more decay, conflict, censorship, and control.
Power-with will lead to collaboration, creativity, resilience, and shared prosperity.
A Call to Build
If you are reading this, you are not just an observer. You are a builder of the next operating system for humanity.
Let us design systems that distribute truth finding, decision making, and problem solving across the many, not the few.
Let us replace control with collaboration.
Let us replace secrecy with transparency.
Let us replace hierarchy with networks.
Let us build a world where power is not held over the people, but held with the people.
The best form of humanity is one built on a culture of power-with. The world is ready for it.

For over 3 billion years on this planet there were only single-celled organisms. Then one day they somehow learned to work together and make complex multi-celled creatures . Right now we are like those single-celled organisms. Our next evolution is finding how to work together, better… (like we wrote about here).

This is how we change the world. We build genies - systems of people like this:

Yes, indeed… Power in the people… That’s the new party we need to make. Time to just say bye-bye to the corruption that fuels both the power-over parties.
Respectfully, the system whose time has come is power 'in' the people. A time to Master the matrix and reinvent ourselves. The results speak for themselves. https://www.ourgreaterdestiny.ca/p/human-operating-system-here-is-the
